Dear Colleagues:

Enclosed you will find the Pastoral Letter from the Council of Bishops entitled: God’s Renewed Creation: A Call to Hope and Action.  The letter contains a liturgical element that is appropriate for use in a worship service.  In addition you will find a Foundation Document supporting the Pastoral Letter at the conference website (www.arumc.org).  It is the hope of the Council of Bishops that you will read this letter in one of your services during the season of Advent, and if appropriate to your service, use the liturgical element for congregational involvement.  If, for any reason, it is not possible to read the letter during Advent, please do so early in 2010.

It is also the hope of the Council that you will avail yourself and your church of the opportunity to study the letter and Foundation Document.  Materials will be available for the study and it is proposed that the study be done during the Lenten Season.

The Pastoral Letter is a call to action for us to address the three global threats to God’s gift of creation:
  •  Pandemic poverty and disease;
  •  Environmental degradation; and the
  •  Proliferation of weapons and violence.
The Council of Bishops is pledged to do its part.  The bishops of the church are inviting you and your congregations to join us in our efforts.  God’s gift of creation is too precious for us to squander.

Faithfully,
Charles N. Crutchfield
