| Charles N. Crutchfield was born on October 19, 1943 in Liberal, Kansas. He is the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Methodist ministers. He attended Southern Methodist University (B.A. 1965); Duke Divinity School, Duke University (M. Div. 1968); and did post-graduate studies in New Testament at University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland (1968-1969). Charles was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from McMurry University, Abilene, Texas (1996). He is married to Karen Jenkins Crutchfield. They have had two children, Scott (deceased) and Melissa who lives in Washington, D.C. Bishop Crutchfield was ordained a deacon in the Oklahoma Conference by Bishop W. Angie Smith. He was ordained elder in 1971 in the New Mexico Conference by Bishop Alsie Carleton. He served in the New Mexico Conference from 1969 until his election to the episcopacy by the South Central Jurisdictional Conference in 2004. He is currently serving as bishop to the Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church, supervising 704 clergy who are serving in 689 local churches. Arkansas Conference is home to 138,000 United Methodist members. Bishop Crutchfield currently serves as Trustee to Hendrix College, Philander Smith College, Methodist Family Health and Methodist Healthcare in Memphis. He is currently serving on the Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. He is also on the Executive Committee of the World Methodist Council, and has served as President of the College of Bishops of the South Central Jurisdiction. Prior to election as a bishop, Charles was elected to serve as a delegate to the 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 General Conferences of the UMC. Bishop Crutchfield’s hobbies include hiking, backpacking, alpine skiing, reading history, gourmet cooking, and travel. |
