Church-related legal issues topic of conference for lawyers
11-10-2008A conference for attorneys who assist local United Methodist churches with legal issues is slated for Nov. 11 on the campus of Philander Smith College in Little Rock.
The 2008 United Methodist Lawyers Conference is hosted by the Arkansas Conference and coordinated by Conference Chancellor William A. “Bill” Waddell. With the theme of “Choosing Five Stones from the Stream: Our Preparation as United Methodist Lawyers,” the program begins at 8 a.m.
Topics and leaders for presentations will include:
• “Legal Relationships and Liabilities Related to Use of Church Premises by Outside Groups,” Bill Waddell;
• “Understanding the Doctrine of Charitable Immunity,” Brian Brooks;
• “ Endowment Development and the Local Church,” Jim Argue and Roger Bryles;
• “Employment Issues in Local Churches,” Irene Howard;
• “Update on Tax Law and Nonprofit Corporation Law,” TonyHilliard;
• “Local Church Insurance Issues,” Irene Howard;
• “Update on Real Estate Law,” Robin Wynne; and
• “Anatomy of a Local Church Embezzlement: Law, Recovery and Prevention,” Brian Ratliff.
Lunch will be provided by the United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas.
