Morris teen receives UM Men national service award

01-25-2010
By General Commission of UM Men

Maggie Thomas, 13, received a national award for providing 25 full-sized quilts for an orphanage in Armenia and 140 lap quilts for nursing homes in Morris.

Searching for a community service project for her 4-H Club, Maggie thought she could make five quilts for an orphanage in Armenia. She set up donation boxes in First UMC in Morris and the UCC Church in Mazon. To her surprise she received 20 quilts and three garbage bags of batting and $100 for postage. With help from her aunt, Judy, she provided 165 quilts, and First UMC honored her with a Good Samaritan Award from the General Commission on UM Men.

The Good Samaritan Award is presented to individuals between the ages of 12 to 19 who demonstrate the attributes of the Good Samaritan described in Luke 10:25-27. Pastors, teachers youth leaders or any adult in the church can nominate young people for the award. For information, visit the “Resources” section of http://www.gcumm.org.
