Mokena pastor puts twist on God vs. Idols
11/20/2010By Pam Good

Pastor Dave Price of Mokena United Methodist Church will be competing in the Rialto Theatre's "Rialto Idol" contest at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 27 at 102 N. Chicago Street in Joliet. Although singing solo at the contest, he is hoping the exposure will lead to more performances for the two bands he uses in ministry.
Music is a big part of Dave Price's ministry. He directs the Mokena United Methodist Church choir, and performs in the two bands at churches and outside events. He loves to play music at churches, to "have some fun, and get to talk to people after the show."
His classic rock band, "Three Fish and a Loaf" plays songs people will know, often with slightly adjusted lyrics in praise of God. The bluegrass/soft rock band "P Diddy and the Trustees" features Pastor Dave and several musically talented church trustees.
The Rialto is an exquisitely restored 1,966-seat theatre which has hosted a long list of top performers. The Rialto Idol singing contest will be judged by a panel of celebrity judges, and attendees are encouraged to bring signs and root for their favorite singer.
"Last year we (our church choir) were there for the Festival of Trees," he said, and he saw that there was a Rialto Idol contest that evening which over 1200 people attended. So, this year one of the teenagers from the youth group used a Flip video camera to record Pastor Dave singing at the church as an audition tape for 2010 Rialto Idol.
"'How Great Thou Art' got me into the audition in the first place," Pastor Dave said. Of the 40 acts originally allowed into competition, 20 finalists remain.
"Just to be onstage, and to belt out a song on that stage, is so fun for me," said Pastor Dave. He plans to sing "Maybe I'm Amazed" by his favorite artist, Paul McCartney. If he makes it to the sing-off, he will sing another McCartney tune, "Let It Be."
Tickets for Rialto Idol are $10 per person and are available by calling the Rialto ticket office at 815-726-6600, or ordering online at rialtosquare.com.
